British Values

St John’s C of E Primary School has served its community since 1844. We welcome the chance to bring together all members of the community and love to celebrate our shared understanding of our British values. We recognise the multicultural, multi-faith nature of the United Kingdom and understand the crucial role our schools play in promoting these values. We are a school for all. This statement outlines the key British values we actively promote.

Individual Liberty

Children have key roles and responsibilities in school, such as children in Key Stage 2 who take on the roles of Dinnertime Helpers, working alongside our Midday Supervisors and Office Staff. This helps them to gain an understanding of responsibility.

All our Year 5 and Year 6 children play a very important role as Buddies to the Nursery and Reception children. They understand what it means to be a role model and to set the tone for the rest of the school- they take this very seriously.

Within school, children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.

As a school we educate and provide boundaries for children to make choices safely.

Through our curricular clubs and opportunities, children are given the freedom to make choices.

Our Mission Statement embodies the values we hold dear in becoming the best St Johnners we can be.

Democracy

Children are involved in Democratic processes e.g. voting for school councillors and shared rewards. The School Council is  led by a member of staff- Mr Page-who adheres to those democratic processes. Alongside the children, he has drawn up a charter for how the council meetings would be led. We have links to the local PCSOs who come into school to educate the children about upholding British law.

Mutual Respect

Our day to day learning embodies values of mutual respect both implicitly and explicitly. Through carefully planned units of worship these values are unpicked and contextualised so that the children and staff can understand to live out those values. Relationships and being a responsible citizen is at the heart of what we want to achieve.

Respect is embedded throughout our whole school. Our Mission Statement asks that the children ‘Love their Neighbour’ and they understand that doesn’t mean just the people you get along with.

The Rule of Law

Our behaviour policy echoes the values of our Mission Statement which all stakeholders understand and follow.

Assemblies, Worship and Ethos time are delivered with a focus on the law e.g. Safety Awareness and E-Safety Awareness.

Parent workshops are offered to support parents on the law around E-Safety.

We regularly review behaviour incidents in school and share these with key stakeholders.

We have links with the local police through the PCSO and Crucial Crew programme

Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Our R.E curriculum provides a broad and balanced education on a range of faiths, religions and cultures. At St John’s Christian values are at the core of our community and our families from other faiths value and embrace this aspect of our school.

We have families from other faiths who choose St John’s because they know we respect and celebrate diversity. The reciprocal partnership allows us to learn and grow together.

Our PSHE Programme is delivered through a cross curricular approach. It is celebrated annually within Healthy Schools Week- we take this opportunity to explore different aspects of PSHE.

We also have connections with other cultural backgrounds through our church partnership. Our children have been actively involved in work with supporting the Dalit’s in India. They understand injustice and strive to make a difference.
